Man I am feeling old

I saw my first UT football game on TV in 1969, the Gator Bowl. The Vols lost to the Gators 14-13 and the rumors running rampant said Doug Dickey was leaving to go to this same Florida team. Man, to lose that game, then the coach, to the same team gave me an early hatred of the gators.

I had listened to the Vols with family on the Radio that year, Bobby Majors could have given Superman a wedgie in my eyes. There were to many heroes to list here. One of these days I will give a run down on UT memories thru my time.

38 years of UT football. Tradition, Shoot, my 86 year old grandmother has followed the Vols, how's that for tradition? I dont think the gators know what Tradition is.

Lately I have been thinking about Tradition in Major College Football. What Tradition? you ask as College Football time is fast approaching? The Bands! Playing at halftime, and all the coverage that went along with a TV game at your school.

One of the things I enjoyed in the stone age, before ESPN, and massive coverage, was each game on TV was treated as something special, many teams were lucky to be on TV each season at all. There was good feeling to see your band perform, and both bands were shown during halftime. I really miss that tradition.

This is also where I know I am getting old... I would 100 percent rather see the bands at the half as to listen to anymore talking heads spout off about some wonder team or player somewhere.

Every year I send a note to ESPN and CBS begging them to show the bands at halftime, even if its in the background. Never any luck there. They have too many folks with to much to say in their 15 minutes to bother with the bands. No, I'm not even thinking of the TV glimpse of the "thrill" of the Ohio St band dotting the I. Spelling must be a chore in Ohio. or the battle of the bands every year. I am talking about big time SEC Bands in action.

I think College Football has lost something special in its growth to a 3 night a week ESPN college gameday talkfest. I think it is now only something that we and our kids can experience by being at the game. The atmosphere used to jump out of the TV in the old days Its a shame we have lost this tradition. Now the networks want to make the game fit in a neat little three hour box. Really enjoyed that time rule last year networks. Something special is missing not to have the bands, and sometimes I think a network positions their sound stuff as far away from the bands as they can get.

Just for the record I like being able to see UT play as many times a year as they can on TV, so  part of the change was good. Either way, I feel unbelievably old wanting to see the bands and not the sports politicians. Just wanted to vent a little bit.

Not Old
Nahh...that sentiment shouldn't make you feel old.  It's just a testiment of what the MSM sports coverage has become.  It's capitalism at its best/worst...all about the money...no respect for anything else.

I'm with you, but just as a counter-point, JP Sports (Yes, I know they're not JP anymore, but "LF" just sounds odd still!) still features a good chunk of 'band shots' at the half...often doing the background thing that you mentioned.

PRECIOUS MEMORIES HOW THEY LINGER
Wow reading yalls stories sure does bring back memories. You young pups are just getting started. I can relate to Aerobabs story about the Arkansas game and the bad weather, man their was not a dry hair on me from my nose to the tip of my tail. When I saw that QB drop the ball I knew that GOD had to be a TENNESSEE FAN.I cut my teeth on Tennessee football back in 1954 in Birmingham Alabama when I was just a  pup, the game ended in a tie 0-0. I did not know much about football, but I sure liked those Orange jerseys. I have had good memories and sadly bad ones, like the Bama game up on the Hill. Bear Bryant was coaching Bama,it was pouring down rain the whole game, with about 2 minutes left Bama was on about our seven yard line on the south end of the field about to score another touchdown, which they did not need cause they were ahead like 42-0 or something like that.I looked around and I think this Old Hound Dawg was the only Fan still there. Thats when I realized that I was crazy or really a Big Orange Fan. Talk about memories like meeting your friends on the corner before the game to watch THE PRIDE OF THE SOUTHLAND BAND come down the Hill and march into the stadium, and hear the stadium anouncer say " PAY THESE PRICES AND PAY NO MORE",a TENNESSEE FOOTBALL GAME is not just a football game its a MEMORY that will last a life time.I have so many and I hope this OLD HOUND DAWG will have many more to come. Thanks,OLD SMOKEY. GO VOLS !!!!

Old memories
I agree about JP and the band coverage. It is much better than the big boys. Even in the background.

1954! wow, the "tails" Old Smokey could tell... One thing  I have heard from those days was about both teams wearing their home jerseys for the game. I would love to see that tradition come back.

I have picked up an Athlon magazine every year since 1973 so I could share some memories with a future fan.  I remember wishing there was someone with old stuff that would be willing to show me.

Thanks for the comments

A Vol since...
Just another old-timer going back to the Swamp Rat and Richmond Flowers and an improbable win over Alabama that made the cover of Sports Illustrated circa 1967?  Condredge Holloway sealed the deal for me in the early '70's.  Hooked ever since.

Television has certainly overexposed/cheapened the product, no doubt about it.  Way too much face time for talking heads and never enough for the majorettes.  Although every year I vow not to do it, my butt will be in front of the tube watching it from noon 'til midnight this first Saturday of the season....like a thirsty man coming in from the desert.  Love the college game.  Go Vols!

Vinnie Testaverde is always remembered for Tennessee kicking his ass.

I wish...
...they would just do away with television announcers and just flash small text updates in a corner of the screen to let people know what happened.
