In a way, there's not a whole lot to write about. The loss is easy to explain: poor shooting. You simply can't expect to win when shooting 33% from the floor - unless the other team's shooting just as poorly (they weren't quite that bad). Vanderbilt played very effective defense - running a 3-2 when Lofton was out and playing man-to-man when he was in. Toward the end, Vandy also did a good job of keeping the ball in the hands of their great free-throw shooters, making our late fouls killers.

Perhaps UT was somewhat fatigued from the Memphis game. With only Sunday and Monday to turn around and take a road trip to a really screwy court, there wasn't much time to refocus, especially when the team got in late to K'ville on Sunday to a crowd of jazzed-up students. Perhaps. That still doesn't change the loss, and that is certainly not the kind of excuse-making Pearl will be doing with the team when they meet again for practice.

Positives from the game. The team played their heart out in Nashville. Part of the reason for so many fouls was because of tight officiating (I will not judge the officiating here). Part of the reason was a few late fouls to preserve the clock (sorta). But a part of the large number of fouls was the effort the team was putting forth on defense. Taking chances on defense will draw fouls, and the team took their shots. The other major positive to take was Lofton. After being smothered in Memphis, he got some open looks and went 6/15 from 3-point land. Also, Lofton went over 2,000 points for his Tennessee career - a big deal because it's a lot of points and we love big round numbers. Lofton now stands at 408 3-pointers in his career and only needs 2 to own 4th place all-time. While Lofton obviously would trade all those threes for the win, it's still a remarkable achievement and props to him for it.

I hesitate adding this paragraph for fear of sounding like sour grapes, but I have no problem with Vandy and I hope they make a deep run in the tournament as well. But Vandy has reasons for concern. As noted by wvvol during the live game discussion, Vandy has played 18 home games of their 27 total games. Further inspection reveals that 13 of the first 16 were at home, with the three road games at Toledo, Butler, and DePaul. The last two were overtime wins. Then they went on a stretch of 4 road games in 5 total games - losing all 4 road games. To say that Vandy has a home court advantage is an exercise in obviousness. To say that they rely on that advantage also cannot be refuted. Unfortunately, the tournament will not be on their court. When the tournament begins, will they struggle and fall out early, or will they learn to handle the road? As I said, I have no problem with Vandy, and props to them for winning an ugly, wild game. But that's a legitimate concern going forward.

On to Kentucky. This game is likely for the Eastern division. Gee, that sounds familiar from somewhere...

I don't have much time this morning, so here come some bullets!
  • As a former athlete, I don't like "tired" as an excuse, but we watched a tired team last night.  I think their brains were more exhausted than their bodies.  Bad shot selection, timidness in getting to the hoop, constant fouling of Vandy late in the game, and other bad decision making just demonstrated some mushy brains.  Speaking of constant fouling...
  • Vandy's last FG came with 5:28 left in the game.  I can't find a play-by-play, but I'm nearly certain that we were only about 6 down at that point.  It's inexcusable that we'd make a bucket to trim the margin, but then send them straight to the line.
  • As bad as the officiating was last night (let me be clear, this is no excuse for the loss), I was quite surprised to see that the teams essentially split on 53 fouls (UT-27, VU-26) and FT attempts (UT-32, VU-37).
  • Only 12 pts from the bench for the Vols. 8 from JP (6 of 7 from the charity stripe) and 4 more from Duke.  Bench was 2-10 from the field, 8-9 from the stripe.  Our bench is where we win games; and apparently loose them too.
  • Brian Williams; 8 minutes played.  3 fouls.  May have been a simple victim of shady officiating...I forget.
  • Wow!  T. Smith pulled down 17 of the team's 45 rebounds (4-O, 13-D)!!  Excellent work in crashing the boards, son!

U be right !!
It looked like the last 8 mins the mighty Bruceballers were running on empty. They played a good game in a screwed up place with touch fouls being called. Now its time to skin some cats at home !

Interesting stat
As much as I detest reading any Vols-related article on ESPN.com, it's kind of like a car wreck. You don't want to look at it but you just can't look away.

That said, there was a pretty interesting stat attached to one of their pieces about this game.

It appears that whenever Chris Lofton attempts 13 or more 3s away from home, we lose. Every time. Going back to 2005. It breaks down like this:

2/26/05 at Ark  7-14 L
3/2/05  at Kentucky 5-13 L
3/18/06 Witchita State* 6-18 L
3/22/07 Ohio St* 6-13 L
2/26/08 at Vandy 6-15 L
*-neutral site NCAA tourney games

Just something to keep an eye on. Obviously, when we get contributions from others, he doesn't need to put up so many, so let's hope they get back to cohesive team ball.

That is interesting.
I think you're right in that it speaks more of the team's cohesiveness than Lofton.  In the Vandy game, Lofton was hot early (and the only one), so it made sense for him to shoot a lot.  He couldn't do it all alone, though.

Interesting
I think it's more a product of "Nothing else is working, so let Chris shoot."  Like we learned last night, it's extremely tough to win a game single-handedly from behind the arc.

Tough one ...
guys.

I actually think the SEC should make Vandy change that bizarre home floor arrangement.  Their home court advantage is just too great.

For what it's worth, I was pulling for you for three reasons:

  1.  Vandy drubbed us in that cockameme gym of theirs, and we owe them one.  I wanted to live revenge vicariously through the Vols, and see the 'Dores hurt (not physically, of course).
  2.  The Vols get us next, and I hate to play a good team coming off a tough loss, especially at home.  Not a recipe for success.
  3.  I like the Tennessee blogs better than the Vandy blogs. :-)
Tough loss, fellas, but I hope you'll understand if I don't wish you luck in your next one.  You probably won't need it anyway. ;-)

Kind as always, Tru.
I'm looking forward to this game, at least for the bloggery.  Between yours and here, it should be a fun time.

Argument for making Vandy change.
With all of the East teams and half of the West teams playing in that home court, there are 8 potential high seeds every year who have to pass through that gauntlet.  Meanwhile, only 1 team benefits.  And if Vandy is good enough to be a top national team, they don't need that much of a HCA to begin with.

That's not excusing UT for losing of course, but the court has proven to be effective at ending SEC #1 reigns.
