You, yes you, are invited to the RTT Orange & White Game . . . thing

Update [2008-4-14 11:27:38 by hooper]: There is a campus map available in the Google group (join at the bottom of this page!) that has the Fan Day, the Vol Walk, and the available stadium gates marked on it. It's too big to conveniently embed here, and it's another great excuse to join the Hullabaloo group and get the updates the easy way! (You can also make your own map here).

Photo by hooper, who I've no doubt
composed this picture with the
perfect ratio of orange and white petals.

Last week before the long summer, folks. The football Vols practice Tuesday and Thursday, then there's the Orange and White Game, and then . . . well, then we wait for fall.

I think Aerobab is still heading up the RTT Orange and White Game Hullabaloo, so he can jump in here, but if you're like me, you've got questions. Use the comment section below for discussion, but because the post will be dropping further down the page as the week goes on, be sure to sign up for the Google group so you'll get emails keeping you informed of everything as decisions are made.

Anyway, some official info on Saturday, in easily digestible bullets:

  • Admission is free.
  • Current forecast: 68 degrees with times of clouds and sun.
  • The game is at 2:30 p.m.
  • Fan Day autograph and photo session will be from 11:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., but it won't be at Neyland Stadium. It's at the Haslam Field practice facility, which is between the Neyland-Thompson Sports Center and Lindsey Nelson Stadium baseball field. Enter Haslam Field from Pat Head Summitt Drive. Somebody needs to embed a map. Those finding their way will be rewarded with a "Fan Pac" of Volunteer football goodies. And yes, it's all a conspiracy to make the masses realize that we have a baseball team.
  • Tennessee players and staff will be scattered about, grouped together by position. The theory here is that it makes it easier to get as many autographs and pictures as possible, but in reality, it makes you choose one or two groups.
  • Yes, there will be a Vol Walk, and it starts at 1:00, but the team won't be entering Neyland Stadium at Gate 21 due to construction so if you're standing there, well then you can take pictures and high five the others that didn't get the message. It's likely that because Trooper Taylor has left for Oklahoma State that there will be no chest bumps. It's unlikely that John Chavis will be high-stepping his way into the stadium.
  • Enter the stadium through Gates 1-10.
  • You can park in any university event parking lot except for Lot 9 or the G10 garage, which are reserved for people better than us.
  • The game will be televised by SportSouth on Sunday at 7:00 p.m.

So that's the official, now for the Hullabaloo information, also in easy to digest bullets:

  • . . .
  • . . .
  • . . .

Okay, so you can see we have some decisions to make. Where are we meeting? When? Are we tailgating? Where? If so, who's bringing what? I know next to nothing about tailgating on campus. And my goodness, how are we going to recognize each other? Should we coordinate the autograph-seeking and picture-taking so we get as many close ups of players to use on the blog as possible? Where are we going to sit?

Note: one of my oldest and best friends is soon moving to Nashville from Wisconsin. When I found out last week that he was going to be in Nashville this week and this weekend to scout the area, I of course immediately implemented the Indoctrination-to-Orange Protocol and invited him to the spring game. He somehow tricked his wife into agreeing to attend with their two boys, so . . . RECRUITING VISIT! They're only going to get a brief and diluted glimpse at Game Day in Knoxville, but the bug bites even then.

So . . . discuss.

ARRRRG!!
My apologies, all!  I was dealt a "hefty sum" of GREAT, LIFE CHANGING news over the weekend and my mind has not been on the "Hullabaloo" as I had promised it would be over the weekend.  Let me throw together a few things this morning and I'll toss something up here around lunch time.

Oooh
And do tell us more about your GREAT, LIFE-CHANGING news. That sounds more important anyway.
Go Vols!

Patience
Patience, Kemosabe.  Good things come to those who wait.  Unfortuantely, I have NOT won the lottery or received an inheritance from a long-lost uncle or had any financial gain for that matter.

I'll make a post on it later on.

For those who are traveling,
here is the TDOT road construction report.  The I-40 construction shouldn't be more than a minor annoyance on a Saturday morning, but it is worth noting.

Also, if you're planning on using Neyland Drive and coming from the east, the James White Parkway is open and will get you on Neyland with only two (favorable) traffic lights between the interstate and campus.  (You can do it from the west too, but you overshoot campus a bit first.  Your choice.)  The James White exit is around mile marker 388-389.  I recommend avoiding Hall of Fame Drive (which is very close by) because of the number of traffic signals.

There are currently no road closures or restrictions on campus or nearby that I know of.  If I hear of any, I'll post them in whichever blog post is the most recent and on-topic.  I'll also post them in the discussion group that Joel referenced in this blog post - you can get updates emailed through that, so I highly recommend joining.

If you're coming from the North,
I-275 has been completely remodeled and the construction is finished.  It's now a 3-lane minimum both ways and is an incredibly easy zoom into downtown and campus.  If you want to get to Neyland and wish to avoid downtown, you can also take James White; just take the I-40 eastbound (Asheville) exit at the end of 275, stay in the right-hand lane, and take the James White exit.  You'll avoid all but those 2 traffic lights that way, as well as the downtown area.

A modest proposal
**I will personally bake and mail a batch of delicious cookies to anyone willing to Tivo the game and mail me a DVD.  I'm not even kidding a little bit.**

(Don't look at me like that!  Y'all are the ones tailgating the spring game!  (And I'm the one pricing flights for this weekend for the spring game.  sigh.))

Seriously, I must see this game.  Somebody help an Orange sister stranded on the wrong coast.

OFFICIAL INFO! (Yay!)
Ok, the highly anticipated "Plan" for the 1st Annual RTT Big Orange Hullabaloo...thing.

Meeting Place:
Primary - Circle Park, just south of the Torchbearer on the south side of the central walkway.

Secondary (in case Circle Park isn't an option)- Just across Volunteer Blvd. from Circle Park in the Humanities Plaza Area.

Google Maps Location.  (If the map doesn't display properly, search Google Maps for "RTT".)

Meeting Time:
I'm planning on getting there around 9:30am.  Hopefully a few others will meet me there and help with the set-up/area reservation.

Food:
Y'allwannaeat?  I do.  I'd love to fire up a grill, but don't have an easily portable one.  Can any attendees help out?  If not, I'll make things simple and bring bocoups of lunchmeat, bread, chips, and cola beverages.  I haven't run any numbers yet, but if I can get a good idea of the number interested in eating, I can bring all supplies and just have ya'll pay, say $5/person for food.  While we'll keep the atmosphere "family-friendly" in accordance with the RTT guidelines, I plan on BMOB (bringing my own booze).  Y'all are encouraged to do the same, so long as we don't have to call the Cops on our own! (Honestly, occifer...he's like a brother to me...I HAAAAD to punch him in the face!)

Needs:
Seats!  Bring your own seating (chairs/blankets)!
Tent!  I prefer some shelter, but again, don't have one of the fancy pop-up tents.  Can anybody provide?
Signage!  Oh, you mean this ISN'T the RTT Hullabaloo?!?!  Any VOLUNTEERS to make a simple posterboard sign to help identify the flock for the lost sheep?
FOOTBAW!  Friendly toss of the pigskin to kill some time?

Wants (nice to have, but not necessary):
Grill!  See above.
Generator!  A lil live-blogging would be cool for those who have wireless aircards.  Higher power, perhaps a TV, Xbox/PS, & NCAA 08??!!

Have I missed something?  Speak up!

GO BIG ORANGE!  Err, GO BIG WHITE!  I'm confused!

See you there, and don't forget to drop a line here to let me know if you'll be dining with us!

Thanks.
Quick questions/comments:
  1. If we do get rain, do we want an indoor meeting area as a backup plan?
  2. I may bring a frisbee rather than a football.  Bring a football if you have one, but the disc might be a little safer.
  3. I'll have to update you later on my arrival time.  Right now, it's completely unknown.
  4. If you're interested in any of the new construction around campus, there are three major projects set to open in the fall:  a new athletic complex at Neyland & Loudon, the Glocker business building at Volunteer and Andy Holt, and the Baker Center at Cumberland and 17th.  I doubt many people will care much, but if that floats your boat, it's only about a 15-minute walk to check them out if you get there early.

I won't be able to come...
Though I would sincerely love to come meet up with everyone, I will not be able to make it. Living 6 1/2 hours away just makes it hard for me to come back for the O&W game, considering my wife spends most of the fall as a football widow.

Maybe we could all plan another get-together this Fall during "real" football season. I would love to catch-up with "some of the friends I've never met"

So, who is everyone pulling for? Hmmm... Orange or White? Tough Choice
