Around SBN: Steve McNair Dead - Former NFL QB Shot and Killed

NFL Draft Day 2

Update [2008-4-27 15:13:43 by hooper]: Erik Ainge to the Jets in the 5th round. I'm not wholly up-to-speed on the Jets' situation, but this should give him a year or two to adapt to the NFL before getting thrown in. That's what he'll need to succeed, I believe.
Update [2008-4-27 10:47:28 by hooper]: Congrats to Brad Cottam and the Chiefs for a 3rd-round pick. I think he'll be a good fit and a bit of a steal at this point in the draft. Chiefs fans, take care of him. We didn't use him nearly to his full potential; may you have years of frustrating my Broncos with deep TE passes!

Due to church and other commitments on Sunday, I'm getting a thread up early for any discussion of the NFL draft.  This will be a flex-thread; the front matter will be subject to change based on time and any news that may come down the line.  However, the comments will remain open and free for draft discussion throughout.

Feel free to use this thread to continue any chat about the events of day 1 as well as to talk about anything from day 2.  Hopefully we'll be able to crow about a lot more Vols getting taken soon.  Day 1's previous discussion can be found here.

And WOO! for Jerod Mayo, who did the Vols proud by being taken 10th overall.  When one of the best-drafting teams in the NFL takes your guy far earlier than anybody projects, that's usually a very, very good sign.

Pretty stoked for Brad...
learning under Tony Gonzolas...plus I get to watch him on the NFL Network for Chiefs training!

And the Bears take...
Another Vandy guy...dang it, I was happy with just rooting for Hillenmeyer and still hating Grossman!  Ha!  But seriously, I think Bennett WR improves our recieving corps tremendously.  It was one of my big worries in the offseason, but we've taken good care of it.

The Bears picks don't look too shabby.
Sensible stuff and needs-oriented.  There's never reason to complain about that.  Nice job by them.

The majority...
..rather those fans who think in broader terms are very happy with our draft save the lack of quarterback.  Then again, we've never focused on the qb position and it looks like that continues into 2008.  It's a huge hole, we just don't see it.  Other then that, we've done pretty well.

For Hooper: Broncos draft C and CB
After a lot of trading...people start making picks!

Broncos fans aren't happy
about the CB.  I think the C can be alright; he'll have a year to learn under Nalen, which is gold.  The Broncos are clearly expecting last year's DT picks to come through.

Picked up another DT though...
and still have three more picks to go.  Hey, they're on the clock!

Interesting pick.
He's solid but slow.  He'll need to play very smart football to overcome his lack of speed.

by hooper on Apr 27, 2008 4:24 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

But most importantly
he's smart and disciplined with a strong work ethic.  Laziness and mistakes are the biggest game-killers in the NFL; eliminating those is more important than raw talent.

Back now
thanks for the update.  Now time to catch up.

Re: Mayo
The only thing worse than being a Patriot would have been transferring to Florida.

Yes, it stings.
That's the life of a Vol fan, it seems.  Happy for the guy, but it's going to hurt to watch.

Ah well...
He and Kelley Washington will have fun...

Hey,
have any Bammers been drafted yet?  I can't find one that has.

by hooper on Apr 27, 2008 4:27 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Missed that.
Nice show, there.  Shoulda seen it sooner.

And the answer is: no, absolutely zero Alabama players were drafted.  FWIW.

Can't wait for the site upgrade.
I'm following along on Mile High Report - the SBNation Broncos blog - and comments are auto-updated without having to reload the page.  That's gonna come in really handy during the UCLA game.

By the way,
If you follow other sports teams that have their SBNation blog moved over, I highly recommend going there and getting your SBNation account set up.  It's a bit of a pain, but once it's done everything is automatic.  If you want to use your current handle (and nobody else has it) you can automatically reserve your handle for all the SBNation sites you've commented on - even RTT.

I got lucky.  Nobody else was using "hooper" so I'll be able to continue with my good old username after the move.
