September 22, 2007 was not your typical Saturday afternoon in Stillwater, Oklahoma's Boone Pickens Stadium. The Oklahoma State Cowboys had just won a "wild shootout for the ages," beating Texas Tech 49-45, but coach Mike Gundy wasn't interested in that. Noooooo, he wanted to talk about newspapers. And reporters. And his age.
Yes, instead of riding the wave of post-victory jubilation, Gundy unleashed a tirade for the ages on Jenni Carlson of The Oklahoman, who had penned a column critical of former Oklahoma State quarterback Bobby Reid. The entire rant was, of course, immediately uploaded to YouTube for posterity:
That particular version of the episode has been viewed some 660,000 times on YouTube alone. According to Wikipedia, the verbal screed "generated discussion about what constitutes fair criticism for players that welcome the adulation of the press when things are going well for them." Bah. What's really important is that it generated a steady stream of parodies and other entertaining bits, the best of which is oranse's Limited Fake Mike Gundy Downgrades the Weather, the winner of the 2007 CFBA for Best YouTube:
