Tied at 7-7 with the Gators early in the second quarter, Tennessee moved from their own 16 yard line to 4th and 2 at the Florida 47. Crushed for being too conservative against Oklahoma the week before, Butch Jones and Mike DeBord not only went for it on fourth down, but cooked up something special:
The end result on this day would lead to more unrest among the masses, some of it falling on conservative play calling once more. But those complaints really only centered on three plays in Tennessee's drive leading 27-21 and trying to run out the clock. The rest of the day the Vols were very efficient against a great defense, using the ground game to grind away but mixing in both guts and creativity on plays like this one. The passing game wasn't a big winner on this day, but it shouldn't have mattered. This drive would culminate in a touchdown a few plays later, helping Tennessee build the lead they would ultimately lose. But this was a great and important play in one of the season's biggest games.
