Tennessee opened SEC play last weekend against consensus top five ranked Florida. The Vols picked up the opening game of the series thanks to Bret Marks' outstanding performance and a handful of Vol home runs. Things did not go as well on Saturday and Sunday, as Tennessee ended up dropping the series in Gainesville. This weekend Dave Serrano's Vols look to improve their SEC record against Georgia.
Tennessee is 116-108 all time against the Bulldogs, but have had trouble lately going 3-7 in the last ten meetings (and have not won a series since 2010). Georgia are on a four game skid after being swept in their SEC opening series by Missouri and being blasted by Mercer Tuesday 16-4. They also dropped games earlier this season against Florida State, Longwood, and a sweep at Georgia Southern.
The Vols picked up a win over Austin Peay on Tuesday, where Zach Warren, Steven Kane, Andy Cox, and Andrew Lee combined for the shutout. Warren got into trouble early, with APSU getting two runners on in the first but managed to work his way out of it. Jeff Moberg hit a solo home run in the fifth, and Simcox got two RBIs, on a sacrifice fly and a single, to give the Vols the 3-0 advantage. Base running is still a concern for the Vols, with Johnny Youngblood getting picked off at second last game and Christin Stewart and Simcox both caught stealing.
Hopefully the Vols can pick up a series win this weekend before traveling to take on the defending champions Vanderbilt next week.
