The Vols continue their road trip this weekend as they head west to Phoenix, Arizona to take part in the Grand Canyon Classic. The Vols will face Grand Canyon, Saint Mary's College, and Central Michigan over the weekend.
Tennessee opened the season last weekend in Chattanooga against Memphis, where they took two games in the weekend series against the Tigers. The Vols opened up the series strong, building a 6 run lead in the first two innings Friday before cruising to an 8-4 victory. Andy Cox was solid in his 4 inning start, with 4 strikeouts and 3 hits. Saturday saw the Vols fall behind 11-0 after giving up 5 runs in the 4th and 6 in the 6th. The lead was cut to 5 in the 7th and again in the bottom frame of the 9th, but the Vols could not close the gap and ended up falling 13-8. Sunday saw UT fall behind again, with the Tigers scoring in the 1st on the throw when a Memphis runner stole second. Tennessee took the lead in the second on a passed ball, and built it up on Vincent Jackson's first home run of the year in the 3rd. John Lipinksi made his UT debut and went 1.1 innings to close out the game 5-2 and get the save.
The meeting against Grand Canyon will be the 4th meeting between the two programs. The Vols hosted the Lopes last season in Knoxville and won two of three in the series. This weekend will feature the first ever meetings between UT and Saint Mary's as well as UT and Central Michigan.
Grand Canyon is 3-2 on the year. They split a four game series against Gonzaga and won the opening game last night 5-4 against Central Michigan. Saint Mary's won three of four to open the season against Seattle University and picked up a midweek win against UC Santa Barbara. Central Michigan is still winless on the year, having been swept by Arkansas and dropped the game last night against GCU.
Next week the Vols will have their home opener Wednesday against Cincinnati followed by another road trip to the Keith LeClair Classic at East Carolina.
