Conference play is here!

The Vols are back in Knoxville this weekend as they open SEC play against the red hot Ole Miss Rebels in the first ever conference opener between the schools.  Tennessee is looking for only their third SEC opening series victory since 2006.

This past week saw the Vols in Asheville where they faced off against the UNCA Bulldogs.  Tennessee started strong in the 1st with Jeff Moberg reaching on a lead off double before back to back walks loaded the bases.  Vincent Jackson followed those up with an infield RBI single before Jordan Rodgers added an RBI sacrifice fly of his own for the early 2-0 lead.  Chris Hall added an RBI in the 2nd and Jackson's sacrifice fly in the 4th led to the 4-0 Vol lead.  UNCA cut into the lead in the 6th with a two run double. Both teams added runs in the 7th before Vincent Jackson picked up his 3rd and 4th RBIs of the night with a bases loaded single in the 8th to give Tennessee the 7-3 win.

Tuesday featured a large blow to the Vols though, as senior second baseman Jeff Moberg has been sidelined for the rest of the season with a torn ACL and meniscus while attempting to stretch a single into a double.  Moberg was off to an incredible start to the season in the lead off slot where he is tied for the NCAA lead with 28 runs scored.  We'll see both Jared Pruett and Brett Langhorne this weekend in the infield trying to pick up the slack.

Ole Miss leads the all-time series with the Vols 45-36-1.   Tennessee took two of three in Oxford last season for their first season victory against the Rebels since 2010.

The Rebels have had an outstanding season so far, winning all but one of their games.  They have a series victory against then #2 ranked Louisville and swept the Chanticleer Classic which featured a game against #22 Coastal Carolina.   The only loss this season for the Rebels was a 4-0 loss against Louisville.  This past week Ole Miss won two midweek games against UAB after sweeping Grambling State last weekend.

Both teams have faced Cincinnati and Memphis this year.  The Vols won two of three to open the season against Memphis in Chattanooga while the Rebels defeated the Tigers in Oxford.  Both teams defeated Cincinnati 7-1.

Next week Tennessee hosts Tennessee Tech on Tuesday before heading to Tuscaloosa to take on Alabama in a three game series.
