Thursday is for ICYMI
- The SEC network's bounty is as boundless as the sea, and its gifts as deep: ending years of local-broadcast insanity, our Worldwide Leader overlords announced yesterday they'll broadcast every SEC program's spring game, including the Orange & White game, which will be aired live on Saturday, April 16 at 2PM EST. Which announcers we'll get has yet to be released.
- Further cementing his status as college athletics' premier repository of "well I guess pushing a broken system to the point of fully breaking isn't the worst thing you could do"-ness, Kentucky's John Calipari announced on Twitter yesterday that his entire team, including walk-ons, would submit their names to the NBA draft in hopes of being invited to the Combine (recall that the NCAA now allows college players to submit their names up to 3 times to the NBA without violating their college eligibility.)
- In somewhat more dubious coaching tomfoolery, Kirby Smart earlier this week explained further his rationale for barring transferring running back A.J. Turman from heading to Miami, or any SEC school. The pettiness of a multimillionaire head coach dictating these kinds of things to an unpaid student-athlete aside, the SEC rule he mentions in the video doesn't actually exist. Say what you will about Mark Richt on-field, but his hands-off approach to transfers was admirable, and one I'd hope more coaches would follow (including Butch Jones, who has had his own share of questionable transfer restrictions ).
- There's not too much love lost between Tennessee and former UConn player Sue Bird, but she has a great piece in the Players' Tribune about the shameful lack of data and analytics for the WNBA.
- Finally, if you haven't seen it and really want to stick it to your employer, Chris from the always-great Smart Football put up a nice commemorative piece on Peyton's retirement earlier this month that's link-packed enough to easily get you through the afternoon.
Happy Thursday!
