Tennessee Vols at the Keith LeClair Classic - Weekend Thread

Another weekend trip for the Vols.

Peter G. Aiken-USA TODAY Sports

Tennessee returns to the road this weekend after a stop in Knoxville as they travel to East Carolina to take part in the 13th Annual Keith LeClair Classic.  They will take on ECU, Maryland, and Southeastern Louisiana during the weekend.

The Vols faced off against Cincinnati this past Wednesday for their home opener.  The BaseVols continued their habit of jumping on teams early as they scored 5 runs in the first, including a 3 RBI triple for Jordan Rodgers.  The Vols tacked on another run in the 3rd on a passed ball before Cincinnati was able to get on the board in the 5th on a solo home run.  Nick Senzel added an RBI single of his own in the 6th to get the 6 run lead back, and the Vols would cruise the rest of the way to the 7-1 win.  Daniel Vasquez was on point in his start, throwing 7 strikeouts in 5 innings while only allowing 2 hits, 1 run, and no walks.  Combined the 5 Vol pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts.

This weekend's meeting with Maryland will be the first between the teams.  UT leads the all-time series with ECU 2-1, with the last two meetings being in an NCAA Super Regional in 2001 which the Vols won.  The Vols and Lions are tied in their series as each team won their home meeting back in 1980.

Maryland started the year at Alabama, where they dropped two of three against the Crimson Tide.  They then returned home and won two of three against Rhode Island before dropping their midweek game this week at Delaware 12-7.  The Terps were picked to finish 2nd in the Big Ten this season after making their second straight Super Regional last season.

ECU opened the year with a six game winning streak as they defeated Longwood in three games, North Carolina A&T, and Virginia in two.  They followed that up with two straight loses to Virginia and Elon.  ECU were picked to finish 3rd in the AAC.

Southeastern Louisiana opened the season with eight straight home games.  They took two of three games against Louisiana Monroe and tacked on a win against Alcorn State before dropping two games of three against Troy.  This past week saw them crush Tulane, who was ranked 27th by Baseball America, 13-4.  The Lions were picked to win the Southland Conference by their preseason coaches poll.

After this weekend the Vols will return home in the midweek to play Western Kentucky on Tuesday before heading to ETSU on Wednesday.  They'll follow that with their first weekend home series of the season against UC Irvine.
