Tennessee returns home tonight after their four game road trip to host the #4 ranked Vanderbilt Commodores. The Vols dropped two games last weekend against Auburn after cruising to a 13-4 victory in the opening game of the series.
The Vols had a midweek game Tuesday at Middle Tennessee State. The Blue Raiders took the lead in the bottom of the first on a single and RBI double. Nick Senzel tied the game back up in the third on an RBI ground out to score Benito Santiago. The Vols added another run in the fifth on an RBI single by Vincent Jackson after a Senzel walk and stolen base. MTSU struck right back to tie the game up at 2-2 in the bottom of the frame on an RBI sacrifice fly. Jackson added to his RBI total in the top of the ninth after a bases loaded two RBI single to retake the lead 4-2. Hunter Martin entered the game in the bottom of the ninth and gave up a single before getting a strikeout and double play to end the game and get the save.
Tennessee leads the all time series record with Vanderbilt 171-152-2. The Vols took one game against the Dores last season in Nashville. The last time the teams met in Knoxville the Vols won two of three in the series.
Vandy had a midweek game this week against Central Arkansas which they won 8-6. Before that they hosted Kentucky for a weekend series where they won the opening two games before dropping the final game 3-0.
After this home series the Vols will host two mid-week games next week against Eastern Kentucky and Alabama State before heading to Missouri for a weekend series.
This past week saw Nick Senzel named to the 2016 USA Baseball Mid-season Golden Spikes Award Watch List.
