The Tennessee Volunteers haven't won a football game since September 23rd. Over that span of time, we've seen the football program spiral downward. Four straight losses have sent the team into a tailspin and likely sealed the fate of Butch Jones.
The Vols will get a break from SEC play this weekend, however. The Southern Miss Golden Eagles will come to Knoxville for homecoming. Southern Miss is 5-3 and a legitimate threat to beat Tennessee.
Vegas thinks the Volunteers are just a touchdown better than the Golden Eagles. The line opened somewhere between six to seven points, depending on where you looked. Tennessee currently sits as a seven point favorite on Bovada.
We follow Bill Connelly's S&P numbers pretty closely here. They've been pro Southern Miss for most of the season. The numbers predicted a 12 point Southern Miss win over Tennessee last week. Those numbers will undoubtedly take a hit this week following UAB’s win over Southern Miss. We’ll update you when those numbers become updated.
We saw some positive signs against Kentucky out of this offense. The emergence of Ty Chandler and potential return of John Kelly should spell trouble for Southern Miss. We saw some flashes out of Jarrett Guarantano, too. As it always is, it’s a consistency thing. We’ll see if Guarantano can start to put it all together against the Golden Eagles.
