Tennessee defensive end Darrell Taylor was already expected to miss the first half of Saturday’s match up versus South Carolina due to being ejected for striking a Georgia player. However, according to a report from Volquest.com on Monday morning, Taylor has now been suspended indefinitely.
Last Thursday, despite comments from players that there were no tensions in the locker room, Taylor and freshman offensive lineman Trey Smith were involved in a fight on the practice field. The fight resulted in Smith needing stitches due to Taylor kicking him in the face.
This is certainly not the news fans wanted to hear heading into what appears to be a must win game versus South Carolina. It may serve as an added distraction, as many have questioned the relationship between players and coaches following a 3-2 start to the season. It is almost certain that the suspension of Taylor will be a hot topic at Butch Jones’ meeting with the media at noon today.
UPDATE: Butch Jones confirmed his suspension today. He did not offer a timetable for his return.
