As the Tennessee football season seems to be spiraling down the drain, Butch Jones took to the podium today and offered his thoughts on the situation. It went about as well as you would expect.
He got things rolling with an instant classic, calling this past bye week one of the best they’ve had in a long, long time.
Butch: "That was one of the best bye weeks we've had here in a very, very long time."

I’m not involved in the program in any way, but no — this wasn’t a good bye week. You had a fight break out in practice between two key players — one of which is your best recruit that you’ve ever landed. (And it wasn’t just any fight. Trey Smith got his face stomped on and needed stitches. Darrell Taylor was suspended because of it.)
You were coming off the worst loss at Tennessee since 1905. Players were tweeting and poking fun at the program’s expense. College Gameday made you a national joke once again.
Best bye week ever, though.
He followed that up with this.
"You don't have to get a physical rep, it can be a leadership rep." - Butch Jones

What
I don’t even know where to begin. Butch once again made Tennessee football the joke of social media for the day. National writers and fans are teeing off.
At this point it’s like Butch Jones is doing an impersonation of Butch Jones — like a Saturday Night Live skit of Butch Jones. https://t.co/pXiMROWgq3

Let me know how them Leadership reps work out for you on October 21st @ Alabama https://t.co/FAmOq92vku
So if you have a five-star heart and you get enough leadership reps, you become a Champion of Life. Did I do that right? https://t.co/lXZDsUctQ5

I wrote this column this summer about Butch and his phrases. I was killed in the comments for “being negative,” but I’d urge anyone that still feels that way to log on to Twitter right now. The entire sports world is buzzing about what he just said.
If you think negative media coverage hurts Tennessee, you’re probably right. But it all stems from Butch Jones, who just can’t help himself. He’s in such a bad spot right now. I think we all just want to hear that he’s got his head down and working to make this team better. Instead, we get a news cycle of Tennessee jokes.
It just pains me to see this program stay a national punchline.
