Tennessee Basketball: Vols take down High Point, 84-53

This one was never in doubt.

NCAA Basketball: Mississippi at Tennessee Randy Sartin-USA TODAY Sports

The Tennessee Volunteers picked up their second win of the season on Tuesday night against the High Point Panthers. This one was close.... for about the first five minutes of play.

In a nearly identical start to the Presbyterian game, Tennessee took control of this game very early on with a huge 32-0 run. The Vols held the Panthers scoreless for over 11 minutes in the first half.

The Vols’ defense was absolutely suffocating — High Point was simply outmatched. With under five minutes to play in the first half, the Panthers had just seven points on the board.

That’s a decent accomplishment for Tennessee, being that High Point hit triple digits in their opener against William and Mary.

On the other end of the floor, Tennessee was scoring at will. Lamonte Turner led the way early on, hitting three triples to pace the Vols. Jordan Bone started hot as well, going 5-7 from the field in the first half to add 13 points for Tennessee. The Admiral came on late in the half, shooting 4-5 and adding 14 points to the cause.

Tennessee’s halftime lead by 39 at halftime. Needless to say, this tune-up game for the Vols was never in doubt.

The Vols eased up a little in the second half, to say the least. High Point outscored the Vols 40-32 in the second half and Rick Barnes was none too happy about it on the bench.

Regardless, Tennessee moves to 2-0.

The next time we’ll see this team in action will be next Wednesday in the Bahamas. They’ll be taking on Purdue (12pm Eastern) in the opening round of the Battle 4 Atlantis.
