If we’ve learned anything from the last two coaching searches, it’s that the Grumors will never truly die. Just when we thought we were in the clear, Jason La Canfora got the fire rolling again this morning with a report from CBS Sports.
The University of Tennessee is again interested in hiring former Super Bowl-winning coach Jon Gruden as its next head coach, sources said, reaching out to the current broadcaster to explore his interest in the job. Sources said school officials have discussed the matter with him, with Gruden a top target for the Volunteers.
La Canfora reports that part of the deal would involve bringing back former Tennessee quarterback Tee Martin to serve as Gruden’s “chief recruiter.” He also noted that boosters were skeptical that a deal could be reached, considering how this went the last time around.
Any of this sound familiar? It should. This is pretty much the exact report on Gruden that we’ve heard all along. The timing is interesting this time around, considering that the grumors were basically dead. This is also the first time that a legitimate NFL reporter has given life to the possibility of Gruden coaching in college.
My two cents: Gruden and his camp want to keep his name hot and the Tennessee job is a pretty easy avenue to exploit right now. Until Gruden or his camp squashes the rumors, they won’t die. They clearly don’t want them squashed, so this is going to continue.
I’m more interested in hearing about Chris Petersen, Scott Frost, Dan Mullen or Mike Leach.
