Report: Tennessee met with multiple candidates over the weekend

A new name here.

NCAA Football: Georgia Spring Game Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

Earlier today, Bruce Feldman floated Chad Morris and Brent Venables as potential candidates for Tennessee. Footballscoop.com is now reporting the same, with a new name in the mix.

Here’s the quote.

Sources tell FootballScoop Fulmer has met (or spoken with)…or has meetings set with Georgia defensive coordinator Mel Tucker, Auburn defensive coordinator Kevin Steele, Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables, SMU head coach Chad Morris and former LSU head coach Les Miles.

For what it’s worth, Volquest.com is saying the same thing on Morris, Tucker and Steele.

We’ve heard Steele, Morris and Miles before, but Tucker and Venables are new names today. Fulmer clearly wasn’t kidding when he said that he would consider assistant coaches.

Mel Tucker is the most surprising name here. He has come into the spotlight this year after his turnaround of the Georgia defense. Tucker is just 45 years old and he’s made stops all over the country to this point as an assistant.

Tucker has held defensive coordinator positions in the NFL with the Browns, Jaguars and Bears. He served as the interim head coach for the Jaguars for five games in 2011. Tucker joined Alabama’s staff in 2015 as the defensive backs coach and assistant head coach before following Kirby Smart to Georgia in 2016.

So after a couple of quiet days, we’re starting to figure out what Fulmer’s candidate pool looks like. However, with the National Football Foundation event set to take place in New York this week, we shouldn’t rule out a new name or two, as the report from Football Scoop points out.

With the National Football Foundation events in New York the next few days, there is ample supply of fresh faces to meet as well.

Source tells FootballScoop Fulmer would like to have his man on board by the end of the day tomorrow; it remains to be seen if that will be accomplished.

So of Tucker, Venables, Morris, Miles and Steele — who appeals most to you?
