Sporting News has released their first bowl projections of the Summer, listing Tennessee in a familiar spot. They have the Vols landing in the Liberty Bowl, joining a few other outlets who are projecting the same outcome.
This does make plenty of sense. Tennessee is projected to win 7-8 games, per Vegas. That would put them in the pool to head to one of the mid-tier SEC bowl games. They’ve hit the Outback, TaxSlayer and Music City Bowls over the past three seasons, so the Liberty Bowl would be a logical next step if Tennessee were to have the wins to do so.
Tennessee hasn’t played in the Liberty Bowl since 1986, so I’d guess the representatives in Memphis would be thrilled if they could land the Vols. They’ve been after Tennessee in years previous, but haven’t been able to get them due to Tennessee not getting to six wins.
I don’t think we can rule out the Belk, Texas, Independence or even the Birmingham Bowls at this point, but the media seems pretty locked in on the Liberty for now.
