The title of highest paid non-coordinator assistant coach has changed within the University of Tennessee football program. That now belongs to Robert Gillespie.

Gillespie — a Tennessee assistant since 2013 — will now make $510,000 this season. GoVols 247 had the full report.

Gillespie now holds three official titles within the program. Running backs coach, recruiting coordinator and assistant head coach. Only Larry Scott and Bob Shoop make more than Gillespie under Butch Jones.

He’s made his mark in the running back room with Alvin Kamara and now John Kelly, but his presence may be greater on the trail. He’s been an instrumental part of Tennessee’s return to high-level recruiting success, serving as the recruiting coordinator since 2014.

We’ll see if he can turn the running back position into a position of strength in 2017 after the departures of Jalen Hurd and Alvin Kamara.
