Butch Jones gave a typical Butch Jones press conference today at SEC Media Days, sticking to his usual talking points. He didn’t offer much information on the quarterback battle, but he gave us a couple nuggets that we can dig into.
Probably the biggest quote of the day was Butch not ruling out playing both Jarrett Guarantano and Quinten Dormady. “If both players earn the right to play, we’ll play both players — it’s a good problem to have,” Jones said.
Jones noted earlier that the Vols wouldn’t name a starting quarterback “until the time is right.” He also said that he doesn’t know when that time is.
A two quarterback system sounds like a very real possibility in 2017. It’s somewhat surprising, considering what Quinten Dormady did in the Orange and White game. Dormady was the one who looked comfortable and in control, while the road was a little bumpier for the redshirt freshman Jarrett Guarantano.
I think the athletic ability of Guarantano is appealing to Jones and Larry Scott, but the pure passing ability and time in the system levels the playing field for Dormady. One thing is clear — this battle is far from wrapped up.
