Butch’s first defensive coordinator at Tennessee is now with a rival school. John Jancek has landed in Lexington as a defensive consultant. Jimmy Hyams broke the news this morning.
Former Tennessee defensive coordinator John Jancek hired as defensive consultant by Kentucky. He is not an on-the-field coach.— Jimmy Hyams (@JimmyHyams) July 31, 2017
Jancek “mutually parted” with the Vols after the 2015 season. Bob Shoop was immediately brought in as his replacement. Jancek ended up taking a job coaching the safeties at South Florida in 2016. Now, he lands back in the SEC with Kentucky.
As Hyams points out, this isn’t an on the field coaching job, so we aren’t likely to see much of Jancek. He’ll likely be an eye in the sky type for the Wildcats.
Somewhat ironically, Tennessee’s defense took a step back in 2016, ranking 95th in the FBS in terms of total yardage surrendered. That was down from 36th in 2015. That big drop-off can be chalked up to injuries for one (Cameron Sutton, Jalen Reeves-Maybin, Shy Tuttle, Kahlil McKenzie and others) and maybe potentially working in the new scheme as well.
However you slice it, Bob Shoop has a lot to prove in year two. Hopefully for his sake, the injury bug stays away this go around.
