Tennessee’s Butch Jones to replace Hugh Freeze at Ole Miss? One CBS Analyst says it could happen

This would be odd.

NCAA Football: SEC Media Days Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports

Butch Jones to Ole Miss? You heard it first from Dennis Dodd. In his list that he just released on potential replacements for Hugh Freeze, Butch Jones landed 3rd on Dodd’s list. That’s perplexing, to say the least. Dodd references Butch’s move to Jimmy Sexton as a reason why. Here’s what he had to say.

Jones' recent move to super agent Jimmy Sexton reminds us that nothing will happen at Ole Miss until Jimmy says it does. Pure and simple, Sexton controls the SEC coaching market. It's easy to imagine Jones ending up at Ole Miss after a 7-6 season that seals the deal for the locals who weren't satisfied with consecutive nine-win seasons.

I really can’t figure out why Butch is mentioned here. I’m not sure anyone is begging to coach the Ole Miss Rebels with all the toxic around it right now. There’s NCAA issues there, the last guy just got fired over an escort scandal — it’s just a mess.

Butch would have to fall on his face to get fired from Tennessee this year, but even if he did, would Ole Miss want a coach that was just run out of town?

The more likely scenario for Jones in 2017 is a seven or eight win season. In that case, I don’t see any way Butch abandons what he’s built in Knoxville to make what most would consider a step down to go to Ole Miss.

Does Jimmy Sexton really matter here? I think Dodd is overselling this a bit. I don’t see any scenario that this happens. My money is on the more realistic Mike Norvell, who went 8-5 in his first year at Memphis.
