2017-18 College Football Bowl Projections: CBS Sports Projects the Bowl Slate

A familiar opponent and location for Tennessee?

NCAA Football: Battle at Bristol-Tennessee vs Virginia Tech Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

We are under three weeks out now. In just a handful of days, we’ll embark on the ride that is college football. What better way to celebrate than Bowl projections? CBS Sports is the source of the latest batch.

Jerry Palm took his shot at predicting the bowl field, but he didn’t go too far out on a limb for his final four. Alabama, Ohio State, USC and Florida State were his playoff participants.

For the Tennessee Volunteers, we’ve seen the Liberty, Outback and even the Texas Bowls as potential destinations. But CBS went a different route. Jerry Palm thinks that the Volunteers will land in the TaxSlayer Bowl, formerly known as the Gator Bowl.

You probably remember Tennessee last trip there. It was a convincing 45-28 win for the Vols, which in turn sent the hype train into overdrive for the 2015 season. That was a fun day.

Would the TaxSlayer take Tennessee back after a three year absence? Probably so. Tennessee travels well and is a traditional power. The opponent? A somewhat familiar foe in Virginia Tech. Of course these two schools met just a year ago at the Battle at Bristol, with Tennessee coming out on top.

As I’ve said all along, I think Tennessee ends up somewhere in the second tier of SEC bowl games. The Belk, Liberty and Texas Bowls haven’t hosted Tennessee yet and would make sense as potential destinations.

What do you think? Is this about right for Tennessee? Where do you think they’ll end up playing this bowl season?
