It was a really solid week for the Tennessee Volunteers. Wins at Vanderbilt and against Texas A&M sustained the momentum from the win over Kentucky, getting the Vols back on track in SEC play. Now sitting at 3-2 in the conference, Tennessee sits behind just Florida and Auburn in the SEC standings.
A road test at Missouri tonight is up next for the Vols, which will bring a familiar face to the table. It’s former Tennessee head coach Cuonzo Martin, who bolted from California to take the Missouri job in the offseason.
Martin landed top recruit Michael Porter Jr., but he’s been unable to play at all this year with a back injury. That was a huge blow to this team, which was expected to compete for the SEC title with Porter in the fold.
All isn’t lost for the Tigers though. They sit at 12-5 overall and 2-2 in the league. Missouri dropped games against Illinois, West Virginia and Utah in non-conference play. They’ve lost games against Arkansas and Florida since, beating South Carolina and Georgia for their two SEC wins so far.
The Tigers have just two players averaging double figures this year. Senior guard Kassius Robertson is putting up an even 16 per game, shooting 43 percent from the perimeter.
Forward Jordan Barnett averages 15 points and six boards for Missouri. The 6-7 senior also shoots better than 40 percent from three point range.
Jeremiah Tilman (6-10) and Jontay Porter (6-11) bring some legitimate size to the Tigers’ front court. Porter has 38 blocks so far on the season. We saw Grant Williams struggle with the size that Texas A&M offered, so that’s something to watch tonight.
Missouri ranks 111th in points per game with 77.1 and 54th in points allowed with 66.5.
