It’s been just two weeks since Tennessee got a road win in Nashville against the Vanderbilt Commodores. Tonight, Vandy will head down I-40 to Knoxville to try once more to beat the Vols.
It did start well for the Commodores in Nashville. Hot shooting awarded them a ten point lead in the first half, but Grant Williams and Admiral Schofield took over in the second half. Williams ended up scoring 37 points, getting whatever he wanted down low. You can bet that will be a point of emphasis tonight for Vanderbilt.
Clevon Brown, Jeff Roberson and Djery Baptiste will have to play big tonight on the defensive end. Tennessee needs to do a better job of defending Saben Lee, who tore them up getting to the rim in the second half two weeks ago. Lee ended the game shooting 7-10 and scoring 21 points. I’d expect plenty of time for James Daniel, who Rick Barnes has called his best on-ball defender.
Senior guard Matthew Fisher-Davis has missed the last two games with a shoulder issue and is questionable tonight. Still yet, Vanderbilt got the win at home against LSU last weekend without him. Interestingly enough, Vanderbilt has yet to win a road contest yet this year. Each of their seven wins have come at Memorial.
Tennessee and Vanderbilt split last year’s games, with Vanderbilt winning in Knoxville. The Vols can’t afford to do that tonight -- and they shouldn’t. Vanderbilt just isn’t very good this year and the Volunteers should roll, especially with the Commodores’ struggles on the road.
