Smith battled the blood clots during the offseason after being diagnosed in February. He was eventually cleared by doctors to return to full participation practice in August and started for Tennessee in its season opener against West Virginia.
There was concern in the offseason Smith may not have been able to play this season — or ever — but he played in each of Tennessee’s first seven games before the diagnosis that the blood clots had returned.
Smith was named a FWAA Freshman All-American in 2017 and was named a Preseason All-SEC First Team selection this season.
