Following a tough 27-24 loss to South Carolina, Tennessee has opened as a significant favorite over the Charlotte 49ers, who are coming off of a 20-17 win over Southern Miss.

The Vols are looking to keep their bowl hopes alive, which took a hit following Saturday’s defeat in Columbia. Tennessee lead for three and a half quarters before the defensive struggles finally did them in. Now sitting at 3-5, Jeremy Pruitt’s group will have to find a way to go at least 3-1 over the final four games in order to make a bowl game.
That stretch begins with a homecoming matchup against Charlotte, who sits at 4-4 so far this year. Wins over the aforementioned Southern Miss, MTSU and Old Dominion highlight their season to this point. We’ll have plenty more on Charlotte as the week goes on.
For Tennessee, this one will serve as one final tune-up before three very important conference matchup against Missouri, Kentucky and Vanderbilt. The Vols have a lot to correct on the defensive side of the football before Kentucky comes to town in two weeks.
