An update.

Tennessee’s search for an offensive coordinator is officially a week old. It seems like it’s close to drawing to a close, however. The Vols have zeroed in on two main candidates — Hugh Freeze and Auburn offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey.

In an appearance on The Nation on WMNL, ESPN’s Chris Low laid out a timeline for the hire while maintaining that Freeze was one of the frontrunners for the job.

“I think Hugh Freeze is right there in the middle of it,” Low said. “I think he has been right there in the middle of it. He’s talked to Jeremy. Jeremy’s talked to a few people. One of the things that Phillip Fulmer told Jeremy Pruitt was to talk to several people. Figure out who is the best fit for him. Who can help Tennessee offensively get back to where they want to get? Right on through, Hugh Freeze has been right there at the top of that list.

“I think Jeremy is trying to check all the boxes. I would expect Monday, certainly Tuesday at the latest, he’s going to have an offensive coordinator on board.”

Chip Lindsey was the only other candidate that Low mentioned by name. That matches up with what John Brice said on Sunday, when he said the search was down to those two names.

With the early signing period creeping up and beginning on December 19th, you can bet Pruitt want this thing done as soon as possible.
