It just wasn’t Tennessee’s weekend, as the Vols saw a 3-1 lead turn into a 6-3 defeat on Saturday to lose their third game to South Carolina in as many days.
Tennessee (17-12, 4-5) couldn’t close out Saturday’s game, as the Vols walked in a run to tie the game in the seventh inning before the Gamecocks’ Jacob Olson hit a go-ahead RBI double in the eighth inning to give USC the lead.
South Carolina added two more runs in the eighth for good measure and secured the sweep over Tennessee.
Vols starter Will Neely had a solid outing, pitching 5.1 innings and allowing just two runs on seven hits while striking out five. Zach Linginfelter came on in relief and gave up the aforementioned bases loaded walk and RBI double.
The sweep is a blow to the confidence of a Tennessee team which came into the weekend on a four-game winning streak and an SEC sweep of its own last weekend over Alabama.
It doesn’t get any easier for the Vols, as Tennessee will host Belmont on Tuesday before welcoming No. 1 Florida to Knoxville for a three-game series next weekend.
