Tennessee’s quarterback battle is about to officially begin on the practice field in Knoxville. Keller Chryst and Jarrett Guarantano will each get their shot to claim the job as camp opens next week.
Before they hit the field, you can place a bet on who is going to win the job. BetDSI.eu currently has odds up, which moderately favor Keller Chryst.

Keller Chryst -185
Jarrett Guarantano +165
Will McBride +1750
Chryst, who is a grad-transfer from Stanford, has been the favorite to land the job since he announced his intentions to transfer to Tennessee. He brings a load of experience to the table, operating inside of Stanford’s pro-style scheme for the past three seasons. Pedestrian numbers overall and the fact that he was benched last season due to ineffectiveness do raise some questions, though.
The good news for Chryst is that the Vols don’t really have any proven talent at the position. Jarrett Guarantano limped a broken Tennessee offense home last year, playing behind a beat up offensive line and competing for a lame duck coaching staff. It’s tough to judge him fairly off of what we saw last season. A fresh start and an offensive reboot could do wonders for him.
Guarantano may actually have the upper hand at first. The redshirt sophomore went through an entire spring practice with the new staff. He was able to get a head start on Tyson Helton’s playbook and form some chemistry with his receivers. Will that be enough to hold off Chryst? It’s definitely possible.
Will McBride gives you some long shot odds here, if that’s your cup of tea. McBride started one game against Missouri last year, but had a rough spring game leading the second team offense. Guarantano looked like the superior player on that day.
If you had to guess right now, who takes the field under center against West Virginia in Charlotte?
