Tennessee recruiting has been down a touch since the 0-2 start to the season. The Volunteers rebounded on the field, now they’re trying to rebound off the field. We haven’t heard too much about five-star prospects during this cycle, unlike 2019. But Tennessee still has a shot with a huge five-star target out west.
Tight end Darnell Washington has been on the radar for the Vols for a while now, and they got some good new on that front on Tuesday. Washington set his official visit date with Tennessee for December 13th, which will be the final of his visits.
So Tennessee will get the final shot to impress Washington, who currently sits as the No. 10 player in the 2020 cycle, according to 247Sports. The five-star tight end is out of Las Vegas, Nevada and stands in at 6-7 (!) 261 pounds.
With Dominick Wood-Anderson exiting the program, there’s definitely an opportunity for Washington to roll into the starting lineup from day one. With three senior receivers leaving Tennessee, the Vols could utilize him on the outside as well.
Washington has taken official looks at Alabama, Georgia and Florida. He will see Miami this weekend, then finish with Tennessee ahead of the early signing period.
Tennessee currently has one true receiver commit in the 2020 class right now in Jalin Hyatt. With Jerrod Means entering the portal, the pressure is on this staff to add more depth as the class comes to a close. Washington would give Tennessee a versatile weapon that they could use right off the bat.
Georgia currently leads in the crystal ball projections, but Tennessee has hung around. Brian Niedermeyer is his lead recruiter. We’ve seen him work some miracles before, so this is a situation to watch over the next couple of weeks.
