Tennessee assistant coach David Johnson is in a new role for the 2019 season, moving over from the receivers to the running backs on Jeremy Pruitt’s staff. Johnson last coached running backs at Tulane back in 2015.

He will inherit a pretty talented stable of backs, returning Ty Chandler and Tim Jordan. Jeremy Banks has settled back in at running back, while four-star freshman Eric Gray enters the mix this fall. That rotation will be interesting to follow through the season.

Johnson got the mic’d up treatment over the weekend, giving us a glimpse inside of the running back group.

“I tell kids all the time I want them to do three things: I want them to be smart, play fast and be physical,” Johnson said in the video. “You look for kids who want to compete at all times. That’s in the classroom, whatever they’re doing, they want to be the best. They have to be tough.”
