Tennessee will open their 2019 season on August 31st at home against the Georgia State Panthers. Thanks to sportsbetting.ag, we already have a line on that game. Tennessee is favored by 26 points over the Panthers as we enter year two of the Jeremy Pruitt era.
Georgia State went 2-10 last season, picking up wins over Kennesaw State and Louisiana-Monroe. They dropped non-conference games to N.C. State (41-7) and Memphis (59-22) in 2018.
Tennessee dropped their non-conference opener to West Virginia last season before beating ETSU 59-3 and UTEP 24-0. Things got interesting late in the season in the Vols’ final non-conference matchup. Charlotte gave Tennessee a run for their money, but couldn’t find the offense to pull the upset. Tennessee escaped with an ugly 14-3 win.
As SBNation’s Bill Connelly points out, Georgia State is in the middle of a slow build and suffered a big setback last season. But the team overall is young and the arrow should begin to point up over the next two seasons. Still, Connelly’s numbers project a 30 point win for the Volunteers to open the season.
