4-Star Tennessee Commit Makes The Opening “Dream Team”

To be the best, you have to beat the best.

The 2019 Opening Finals concluded on Wednesday in Frisco, Texas. The highly anticipated recruiting showcase attempts to bring the top players in the country under one roof and see who stands out from the rest.

Needless to say, nothing will be more accurate than real game conditions. All the practice reps and testing drills in the world will not accurately determine the best players in the country.

Still, any press is good press. That’s exactly what Cooper Mays has brought for Tennessee, in light of his selection to 247Sports’ 2019 Opening Finals “Dream Team”. Mays comes in as one of the five picks for the offensive line. Here’s what 247Sports had to say about his performance:

“The only place that we strayed from The Opening staff on our Final Five for the offensive line was Mays. The Tennessee commit missed the cut for the Final Five in favor of Myles Murao who also had a great week but he edges Murao out on our list because of the way he was able to battle from the beginning to the end of every rep. At 6-foot-3, 282 pounds, Mays was also athletic with a 4.63 shuttle but his tenacity, resetting his hands and keeping his feet moving every rep earned him some wins that other offensive linemen would have let slip away.”

None of this is totally surprising to those who follow Tennessee recruiting. Mays is a very well rounded player whose main knock was size concerns. His recent (good) weight gain means that he’s already working towards becoming an early contributor for the Vols.

If his recent performance is the real deal, it’s hard to not see him playing as a true freshman. Continued weight gain with increased physicality is all you could ask for from a lineman like Mays. Getting the finer things like hand technique down is a plus.

Stay tuned for more potential Tennessee news from The Opening and how quarterback Harrison Bailey performed overall.
