Not all that surprising, but still disappointing.

College football recruiting taketh, and college football recruiting giveth. Tennessee’s momentum on the trail was hit a bump in the road Friday afternoon when 4-star JUCO defensive end commit Jordan Davis flipped from Tennessee to Mississippi State.

Those who have followed Davis’ recruitment can’t say they’re too surprised by this development. Davis was highlighted as one of the shakier commits of the class shortly after he originally announced back in November 2018. Davis has shown interest in a variety of programs since then, and it was always a bit of a mystery at who he was leaning towards. That question was answered when he tweeted a commitment to Mississippi State.

Tennessee is already in the market for multiple defensive ends, so Davis’ decommitment is both a blessing and a curse. On one hand, he is a gifted athlete who could come in and contribute on the line pretty early. There is a reason he is ranked as one of the best JUCO options.

On the other hand, it also means Tennessee will have a spot open for another defensive end who might otherwise be on the outside looking in. The staff would probably prefer a player with a more firm commitment than Davis. As a quick rundown, names to keep an eye on are Jay Hardy, Morven Joseph, Tyler Baron, Corbet Mims, and BJ Ojulari.

This development knocks Tennessee outside the top 25 of the very early 247Sports Team Rankings. Their only other defensive lineman left in the class is 4-star defensive tackle Dominic Bailey.
