The Lady Vols will head north tonight to renew one of college basketball’s greatest rivalries. Tennessee and UConn will finally meet once again, marking the first contest between the two sides since 2007.
Once a mainstay of the sport, the rivalry was put on hold after Pat Summitt called off the series following an accusation of a recruiting violation on the UConn side. Now the game is back on, and it’s set to benefit Summitt’s foundation.
It will be the 23rd ever meeting between the two schools. The Huskies currently own a 13-9 advantage over Tennessee, but the Lady Vols have won three straight decisions in the series.
UConn, of course, has become far and away the top program in women’s college basketball over the last decade. They enter tonight as the No. 3 team in the country with a 16-1 mark on the year. Under first year head coach Kellie Harper, Tennessee sits at 15-3 overall, ranked 23rd in the country. It will be her first ever meeting with Geno Auriemma.
Will the rivalry have the same feeling that it once did? Probably not, at least probably not right away. After all, these players were in elementary school the last time these teams met. But it’s a start. We’ll see where the series goes from here.
