The Lady Vols kicked off basketball season in Tennessee on Saturday afternoon with a victory over Western Kentucky, moving to 1-0 on the season. It was an 87-47 victory for the Lady Vols, who really took control in the second quarter and never looked back.
Tennessee extended its 17-13 advantage after the first quarter, outscoring the Hilltoppers 21-7 in the second quarter. The rout was on from there.
The Lady Vols shot 44 percent from the field and nearly doubled up Western Kentucky on the boards, winning the rebounding battle 56 to 32. Rae Burrell led the way with 18 points, followed by Jordan Walker with 13, Marta Suarez with 11 and Rennia Davis with 10. Davis also added 11 rebounds to the cause.
Newcomers Suarez, Walker and Keyen Green each started for the new-look Lady Vols, helping power Tennessee to an easy opening day win.
“I thought we played hard,” head coach Kellie Harper said after the game. “It took us a little while to settle in offensively. I still think we missed some shots we can make. We can clean up some execution offensively, hopefully before our next game. Defensively, we had some kids that just made plays. Overall, our 1-on-1 defense can be better. We’ll work on that. You don’t come out in game one and play perfectly. I’m proud of our team. I’m proud of our effort. I thought we had some really bright spots and a lot of encouraging moments out there that are really going to help us.”
Highlights from the game are below.
The Lady Vols are back in action on December 1st (Tuesday) against ETSU. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. ET.
