Game No. 2 for the Tennessee Volunteers men’s basketball team is set for 12:30 p.m. ET time today at Thompson-Boling Arena. It will be another quality opponent coming to town, as the Cincinnati Bearcats have made the trip south.
Tennessee got their season off and rolling with a tough, low-scoring win over Colorado on Tuesday. They’ll likely be tested again today, as Rick Barnes continues to play catch-up with the rest of the college basketball world.
Cincinnati holds wins over Furman and Lipscomb, with the one blemish on their record coming against Xavier. John Brennan is in his second season as head coach, taking over for Mick Cronin after he left for the UCLA job.
Tennessee will face another tough veteran guard this afternoon with Keith Williams coming to town, who is coming off of a 27 point performance against Furman. Williams is now averaging over 17 points per game, but will be tasked with beating a really tough Tennessee backcourt today.
In the post, the Bearcats feature a ton of size that could give Yves Pons and John Fulkerson some issues today — more on that below.
As you probably remember, Cincinnati got the better of Tennessee last season as the Vols were still trying to find their way. The Bearcats pulled away late to finish off the Volunteers to the tune of 77-69. Tennessee is looking for a little revenge this afternoon.
Cincinnati Key Players
G Keith Williams (6-5, 215): 17 points per game, but only shooting 18 percent from three-point range so far.
G David DeJulius (6-0, 195): Michigan transfer. Second leading scorer on the team, averaging over ten points, while adding nearly seven rebounds and five assists per contest.
C Chris Vogt (7-1, 260): Averaging over nine points, but somehow just four rebounds per game. Shooting a staggering 87 percent on the season.
F Rapolas Ivanauskas (6-10, 235): Another sizable piece of the Cincinnati frontcourt, scoring in double figures in two of three games so far this season.
