Another twist for Tennessee football recruiting came Tuesday night. 3-star safety/cornerback Edwin White announced he would be reopening his recruitment.
I would first like to thank the coaching staff at The University of Tennessee , for believing in me and offering me my first year in high-school but I would like to decommit from Tennessee to open my options up again to find a true home @beckwith2_ @RobbyBakerTV @aldotcom @WKRG pic.twitter.com/hKnvAVeYrq— Edwin White 1️⃣ (@TheEdwinWhite6) December 16, 2020
The announcement comes less than an hour after 3-star running back Elijah Howard made a very pointed flip to Virginia Tech. It is unclear if the two are linked, or if it was simply bad timing.
Either way, the defensive back situation for Tennessee recruiting is getting dire. The Volunteers needed a minimum of 3-4 in the class, and White could have been vital to future plans since he’s capable of playing both safety and cornerback. Tennessee took his commitment in March, and held steady ever since. There were more than a few evaluators who thought White had potential to be a All-Conference type of player at the next level. He was still developing and had tons of room to grow.
It seems he will have to capitalize on that potential elsewhere. While we do not claim to know the intricate details of this recruitment, it seems odd that White would have a sudden change of heart at the last moment before signing day. We do not know which side initiated the decommitment.
Tennessee now has just three defensive back commitments in its 2021 class, and none of them are true cornerbacks. How exactly the Volunteers plan to fill this need is anyone’s guess. They could very well pull off flips in the Early Signing Period, or even wait until the traditional National Signing Day. Or even more obscure, they could go the transfer/JUCO route. Either way, Tennessee needs to figure out something, and fast.
