When Darion Williamson didn’t sign with Tennessee during the early signing period, the Volunteers had a need to fill. They had already inked two receivers, but neither one had much size. With Williamson out of the picture, Tennessee set their sights on a couple of different targets.
This morning, one of those targets became a Volunteer. Demarcus Beckwith, otherwise known as Dee, committed to Tennessee at his high school today. The four-star athlete and cousin of Tennessee point guard Lamonte Turner became the 22nd member of the 2020 class.
Beckwith took official visits to Tennessee and Florida down the stretch in January, ultimately deciding to be a Volunteer.
Beckwith is out of Florence, Alabama. He is the 358th ranked player in the class, according to 247Sports. At 6-4, 215 pounds, Beckwith fills that need of a big pass catcher. He played quarterback in high school, but projects as a receiver or even possibly at tight end at the college level.
He joins four-star receivers Jalin Hyatt and Jimmy Calloway in Tennessee’s 2020 class, creating a solid and versatile group for the future. With Jauan Jennings and Marquez Callaway now gone, there might be some opportunities to play early on for each of these guys.
With Beckwith now in the fold, what happens with Malachi Wideman? It’s a Florida State, Tennessee, Oregon battle. Can the Vols land both? We’ll find out around lunchtime. (Update: They did.)
For now, enjoy some Beckwith highlights.
