The Tennessee Volunteers are looking to build off of a strong finish to the 2019 season, which saw them rebound from a 2-5 start to finish at 8-5 with a bowl win. The season featured a historic loss to Georgia State and a complete meltdown loss to BYU in the opening weeks of the season. But Jeremy Pruitt was able to turn things around pretty quickly.
Now with some momentum in his pocket, Pruitt is looking to take the next step with his Tennessee program — assuming we do get to play college football this year. Tennessee beat the teams that they’re supposed to beat down the stretch, now they must find a way to get on the level of Florida, Georgia and Alabama.
According to the sportsbooks, Tennessee is right there on the doorstep in that next tier after college football’s current elite. The Volunteers are tied for the 16th best odds in the College Football National Championship odds, currently paying out at 50-1. That’s tied with programs like Washington, Wisconsin and USC.
Clemson, Ohio State, Alabama and Georgia take the current top four positions. LSU, Florida and Auburn aren’t too far behind, illustrating the depth of the SEC. Texas A&M and Tennessee are next in line, placing 7 SEC programs inside of the top 16 of the national title odds, per BetOnline.

Auburn, Texas A&M and Florida serve as potential emerging threats in the conference, if you follow the odds. Tennessee is the best of the rest — a cut above the bottom half and a cut below the top half.
