An under the radar defensive line target has named Tennessee to his top seven schools. Demarcus Smith, currently unranked by 247Sports, named Mississippi State, Ole Miss, South Carolina, UAB, Kansas, Memphis and Tennessee as his current top choices on Friday.

Smith did note that his recruitment was still “100 percent open.”

The 6-3, 262 pound defensive line prospect didn’t have much attention from the power five schools, but Tennessee changed that. Smith attended a junior day in Knoxville back in January, earning an offer in February from the Volunteers. That offer came after a South Carolina offer on the same day.

Ole Miss and Mississippi State followed over the next couple of months, creating more options for the Birmingham, Alabama native. Smith told 247Sports that Tennessee was trying to keep him hidden early in the process, but the South Carolina offer — likely coming from former defensive line coach Tracy Rocker — threw a wrench into those plans.

Tennessee currently holds 21 known commitments for their 2021 class. Four-star Katron Evans and three-star Isaac Washington are the lone defensive interior prospects committed to this point.
