Another target of Tennessee football has narrowed down his list of schools. Demarcus Smith, a defensive line prospect out of Birmingham, Alabama, announced a top five of Tennessee, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Kansas and South Carolina on Wednesday.
Top 5️⃣ Blessed to be in the position that I’m in‼️ @CoachWarren23 @AHParkerFootba1 @OleMissFB @GamecockFB @HailStateFB @Vol_Football @KU_Football @Rivals @ChadSimmons_ @YellowhammerFB @AL5AFootball pic.twitter.com/dd3I2TpXrP— DeMarc (@Deecoldesstt5) July 22, 2020
Smith is unranked by 247Sports, something that’s sure to change considering all of the interest that he currently has from SEC programs. The 6-4, 264 pound prospect trimmed UAB and Memphis from the running with this update.
South Carolina was the first power-five offer for Smith, while Tennessee followed shortly after. The Volunteers were able to get him on campus for a visit before the COVID-19 pandemic shut things down.
Defensive line coach Jimmy Brumbaugh has taken the lead role in Tennessee’s pursuit of Smith. The Vols currently hold commitments from two defensive linemen — KaTron Evans and Isaac Washington. They’re in the hunt for another one in Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins, once again in a battle with South Carolina.
Smith is one name that’s flying under the radar, but one to certainly pay attention to. Tennessee has been involved from the jump here, and it’s going to be interesting to see if anyone else jumps in the race. Smith told 247Sports that he currently doesn’t have a timetable for a commitment.
