We knew that the Tennessee Volunteers would be taking part in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament in Connecticut this year, but now we know who they’ll be facing to open the event. The Vols will meet Villanova, recreating a matchup we saw a few years ago in the Battle 4 Atlantis.
The news was shared by Jon Rothstein over the weekend.
North Carolina will meet Purdue in the other first round matchup, marking an early test for new Carolina head coach Hubert Davis. Tennessee and Purdue are no strangers either, meeting in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament and again in the 2019 NCAA Tournament.
The first round matchups are scheduled for November 20th, while the second round will take place on the following day.
Villanova will once again be one of the top ranked teams in the country this season, set to return four of five top scorers from a year ago. The early season meeting will be the fourth all-time between Tennessee and Villanova.
Tennessee will have a completely new look once again, adding five-star guard Kennedy Chandler and five-star big man Brandon Huntley-Hatfield. Auburn sharpshooter Justin Powell has transferred in, while the Volunteers picked up big signatures from four-star guard Jahmai Mashack and four-star center Jonas Aidoo. Veterans John Fulkerson, Josiah-Jordan James, Santiago Vescovi and Victor Bailey Jr. will all return, creating a dangerous group on paper.
With a normal training camp setting returning this season, perhaps this roster can find some sort of groove before this early test.
