Another opponent has emerged on Tennessee’s 2021-22 non-conference schedule. ETSU will once again make the short trip to Knoxville to face the Volunteers ahead of conference play in January.

In addition to the obvious location tie, ETSU is now led by former Tennessee assistant Desmond Oliver. Oliver spent six seasons with Rick Barnes in Knoxville, and now takes over in Johnson City following the exit of Jason Shay.
Oliver was the second Tennessee assistant to land a head coaching gig this offseason, as Kim English moved on to George Mason. Barnes not only remade his roster, but he was forced to remake his coaching staff as well. Replacing Oliver and English will be Rod Clarke and Justin Gainey, and each have already helped out the Volunteers on the recruiting trail this offseason.
Tennessee has faced ETSU 18 times, coming out on top in 16 of those meetings. The two schools last met in 2016.
ETSU is the latest addition to a non-conference slate that features plenty of early season tests. Tennessee has a road trip planned to take on Colorado, and will also meet Memphis in Nashville. The Volunteers will also take on Villanova, and then face either North Carolina or Purdue in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off.
