After an unfortunate and controversial ending against Alabama on Wednesday in the SEC Tournament, the Tennessee Volunteers came out swinging on Thursday and took care of the No. 3 seed Mississippi State. That win earned them a rematch against Alabama, and boy — these Volunteers were ready to roll.
Blade Tidwell got the start for Tennessee on the mound, and as it turns out, he had quite the easy day ahead of him. The Volunteers came out guns blazing, picking up right where they left off against Mississippi State.
Luc Lipcius got Tennessee rolling with a two-run shot off of Alabama starter Landon Green, and that was just the beginning of Green’s issues.
He hit Liam spence to kick off the 3rd inning, and then Max Ferguson knocked him home with a double. Drew Gilbert picked up an RBI to follow with a single, and then Evan Russell added another double of his own.
Green’s day was done after that, but the Tennessee bats didn’t stop.
Lipcius drove in another with a single, and an Alabama error kept the rally moving. Pete Derkay drove in the fifth run of the inning with another base knock, bringing our score to 7-0 through just three innings.
Evan Russell provided more fireworks in the 4th with a two-run home run to push the lead to 9-0.
Meanwhile, Tidwell had gone five innings while surrendering just one hit.
Liam Spence and Max Ferguson went back to back with home runs of their own, each absolutely crushing line drives over the fence. The blowout continued, and after what happened on Wednesday against this same team, it had to feel good.
Tennessee finished up in seven innings, run-ruling their opponent for the second consecutive day.
Final Score: Tennessee 11, Alabama 0
The Volunteers move on to face the Florida Gators in an elimination game on Saturday. That game is slated to begin at 1 p.m. ET.
