LSU hires Arizona’s Jay Johnson as next baseball coach

Tony Vitello appears to be staying put.

According to multiple reports, LSU will hire Arizona’s Jay Johnson as their next head baseball coach, replacing the retiring Paul Mainieri. Clearly this is big news on the Tony Vitello front, who was connected to this job and the Texas A&M opening earlier in the year.

Danny White now must work out a new deal, including a hefty raise for Vitello. A financial commitment to the baseball program is also a must — both of which appear to be in the works.

Vitello just finished up his fourth season at Tennessee, leading the Volunteers to the College World Series after capturing the SEC East crown. The Vols landed as the No. 3 national seed, winning 50 games and making their first trip to Omaha since 2005.

For the first time in a long time, the Tennessee baseball team had the full attention of this fanbase. With Vitello appearing to be set to stay, he and Danny White have a chance to really create a special program in Knoxville.
