Tennessee has landed the first player in the class of 2022, and it’s one that’s been talked about for some time. BJ Edwards, a four-star point guard out of Knoxville, has made his commitment to Tennessee this afternoon.

The announcement was made on his Instagram page.

Edwards was a longtime target of Rick Barnes, playing his high school basketball just down the road at Knoxville Catholic. The 6-3, 170 pound lead guard prospect is the 4th ranked player in the state of Tennessee, checking in as the 68th ranked player in the country, per 247Sports.

Edwards held offers from several schools, including Auburn, Florida, Georgetown, Wake Forest, Georgia, South Carolina, Seton Hall, Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech.

Landing Edwards gives Tennessee some obvious insurance for next season, should Kennedy Chandler bolt after one year in college to the NBA. Whether that happens or not, the physical Edwards should be ready to contribute right away for Tennessee. He fits the Barnes mold, possessing toughness, defensive ability and a knack for getting to the rim.

As a junior last season, Edwards poured in 19.9 points per game, while grabbing seven rebounds and adding five assists per contest. He connected on 52 percent of his shots from the field, shooting 32 percent from three-point range.

Edwards will be heading into his fourth season as a starter this year for Knoxville Catholic.

Rick Barnes now has his first piece of the 2022 puzzle in place, and he and his staff are chasing several more high-profile prospects. Four-star wing Dillon Mitchell just recently joined Edwards on an official visit to Tennessee. Five-stars Brandon Miller and Cason Wallace have each already made it to campus for visits last month.

Now with the point guard in place, the staff will try to stay hot and land a few more elite pieces over the next few months.
