Marquez Callaway goes off for two touchdowns against Jaguars

NFL: New Orleans Saints at Baltimore Ravens Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

Marquez Callaway is a special football player — those who struggled through the 2017, 2018 and 2019 Tennessee football seasons know this. His problem, at least in college, was quarterback play. But the glimpses were certainly still there.

Callaway arrived in that wild Georgia Tech opener to kick off the 2017 season, truly putting the team on his back to will the Volunteers to an overtime victory. Unfortunately, that was the high point of his season. He really never put up big numbers while in Knoxville, thanks to the last staff’s inability to find and develop a quarterback.

But that’s all changing in the NFL. Callaway went undrafted, but landed in a fantastic spot with the Saints. He got his feet wet last season, and now appears to be well on his way to becoming a starter in 2021.

Tonight against the Jaguars, Callaway showed out with a couple of touchdown catches off the hand of Jameis Winston. Check out this ridiculous grab below.

And one more time for good measure.

If you’re scoring at home, that’s five grabs for over 100 yards and two touchdowns in less than a quarter of play.

Callaway always had a knack for the ridiculous, contested grab. Honestly, with the tape he had, I was always shocked that he didn’t hear his name called in the draft. It all worked out though, as he landed in seemingly the perfect spot.

With the Michael Thomas situation ongoing, Sean Payton might just be forced to lean on Callaway in a big way early this season.
